BRSR Reporting Software in India: How to Choose in 2026

Breathe ESG supports all major global reporting frameworks, including BRSR and BRSR Core, GRI, CSRD/ESRS, CDP and CBAM. This guide is written for ESG, finance and compliance leads at Indian listed companies choosing a BRSR tool.
The short answer
Good BRSR software does three things. It collects data from plants, HR, finance and procurement without a mailbox full of spreadsheets. It keeps an evidence trail so a third party can check every number. And it produces the BRSR in the format SEBI expects, not a generic sustainability report you then have to reshape.
If a tool does those three well, the rest is detail. If you are in the top 1,000 listed entities, add a fourth: it should make your BRSR Core assessment or assurance easier, not harder.
Who has to file a BRSR, and what changed for FY 2026-27
SEBI requires the top 1,000 listed entities by market capitalisation to file the Business Responsibility and Sustainability Report. Everyone else can file voluntarily. The report has three sections: general disclosures (Section A), management and process disclosures (Section B), and principle-wise performance against the nine principles of the NGRBC (Section C).
BRSR Core is the subset of KPIs that gets third-party checking. SEBI's circular of 28 March 2025 (SEBI/HO/CFD/CFD-PoD-1/P/CIR/2025/42) changed the route. Listed entities can now choose an assessment done under standards from the Industry Standards Forum, or an assurance engagement. Either way, it is mandatory on a glide path:
| Financial year | BRSR Core assessment or assurance applies to |
|---|---|
| FY 2023-24 | Top 150 listed entities |
| FY 2024-25 | Top 250 listed entities |
| FY 2025-26 | Top 500 listed entities |
| FY 2026-27 | Top 1,000 listed entities |
Value chain disclosures are voluntary for the top 250 from FY 2025-26, with assessment or assurance of those also voluntary from FY 2026-27. Partners who individually make up 2% or more of purchases or sales are in scope, and you can cap coverage at 75% of purchases and sales by value. If you report value chain data, state the share you covered.
The practical takeaway: if you sit between rank 501 and 1,000, this is your first assessed year. Your data trail needs to be ready before the year closes, not after. For a plain-English walkthrough of the framework itself, start with our BRSR requirements guide, and for the Core KPIs see BRSR Core and supply chain readiness.
Why spreadsheets break at assessment time
Spreadsheets work in year one. By year two the cracks show.
Versions multiply. Plant teams send numbers in their own formats. Nobody remembers why last year's energy figure changed. When an assessor asks for the source of a number, the answer is a forwarded email from March.
BRSR Core makes this worse because the assessor tests the data, not just the narrative. A tool earns its fee when you can click a number and see who entered it, when, and which document backs it.
What to check in any BRSR reporting software
Use this as a demo checklist. Ask the vendor to show each item on your data, not a slide.
- BRSR-native structure. Sections A, B and C, essential and leadership indicators, and BRSR Core as first-class views. Not a generic template renamed.
- Evidence trail. Every figure linked to a source file, an owner and a timestamp. Ask to see what an assessor would see.
- Multi-site collection. Role-based access so a plant manager enters plant data and nothing else, with approval steps before numbers roll up.
- Emissions and energy done properly. Scope 1, 2 and 3 with emission factors you can inspect. Principle 6 and several Core KPIs depend on it.
- Value chain support. A way to capture supplier and buyer data and track your coverage against the 2% and 75% rules.
- Output in the format you file. Ask how the BRSR leaves the tool and how it gets into your annual report and exchange filing.
- Other frameworks from the same data. If you have a European parent, a CDP request or CBAM exposure, you should enter data once.
- People behind the product. Who helps when a KPI definition is unclear or an assessor pushes back?
Software, consultant or both?
This is the question we see most. The honest answer depends on where you are.
| Your situation | What usually works |
|---|---|
| First BRSR, small ESG team | Software plus advisory support for the first cycle |
| Year two or three, process is stable | Software, with consultants only for the assessment window |
| Rank 501 to 1,000, first assessed year | Software with an evidence trail, plus a readiness review before year end |
| Many sites, many entities | Software with strong workflow and access control |
A consultant alone leaves you rebuilding the process every year. Software alone leaves you stuck on interpretation. Most Indian listed companies end up needing both, in different proportions over time.
How Breathe ESG fits
Breathe ESG is a platform plus people. The platform handles BRSR and BRSR Core alongside GRI, CSRD/ESRS, CDP and CBAM, so one dataset serves every disclosure you owe. The people side covers ESG consulting, fractional Chief Sustainability Officers, training through Breathe Academy, and a peer community in Breathe Zero. Teams with EHS needs can also track them through Breathe SAFE.
If you are comparing vendors, we have written side-by-sides on StepChange, Updapt, Credibl and Climes. For a wider market view, see our sustainability reporting software roundup and the guide to ESG reporting tools built for compliance.
A simple way to run the evaluation
- List your BRSR owners. Who enters data, who approves, who signs off. Tools fail on workflow before they fail on features.
- Pick one hard section. Principle 6 (environment) is a good test because it pulls energy, water, waste and emissions together.
- Run last year's real numbers. Ask each vendor to load them and show the evidence trail.
- Ask for an assessor view. Can you hand a third party read access to what they need and nothing more?
- Check support in your timezone. Filing season is not the time to wait for a reply from another continent.

FAQs
Is BRSR mandatory in India?
Yes, for the top 1,000 listed entities by market capitalisation. Other companies can report voluntarily. See our guide to ESG reporting rules in India.
What is BRSR Core?
A focused set of KPIs from the BRSR that must go through third-party assessment or assurance on SEBI's glide path. It covers attributes such as greenhouse gas footprint, water, energy, waste, employee wellbeing and business conduct.
Do I need BRSR software if I already use a consultant?
Often yes. A consultant can interpret the rules, but the data still has to be collected, approved and traced every year. Software gives you that repeatable process, and the consultant can focus on judgement calls.
Can one tool cover BRSR and other frameworks?
It should. Look for one dataset that maps to BRSR, GRI, CDP and CSRD/ESRS, so you are not re-entering numbers. We compare the frameworks in BRSR vs CSRD vs ISSB.
When should I start preparing for FY 2026-27 assessment?
Now. The assessor will test data from the whole year, so the evidence trail needs to exist from the start of the year, not the end.
What is the difference between assessment and assurance?
Under SEBI's March 2025 circular, assessment is third-party work done under standards developed by the Industry Standards Forum. Assurance is a formal engagement by an assurance provider. Listed entities can choose either route.
